Three Mistakes Keeping You From Hitting Your New Year’s Goals and What to Do About It
We have a saying at MOTIVFIT: “It’s about progress, not perfection.”
Last week we discussed the fresh start of a brand new year and ways to create doable daily action steps that will move you in the direction of your goals for 2021. Now, half way through the month of January, you are either working toward making your daily action steps a habit…
Or you’re not.
And there you have it folks! The secret to health and fitness ;-)
You are either making progress or you’re making excuses. Both take effort but only one will move you toward a stronger and healthier body with a more energetic and active life.
The fact is, studies have shown that over 80% of health and fitness goals are quit on before the second week in January!
The reason? 3 main mistakes.
Mistake #1- Biting off more than you can chew
Start small with simple things you are confident you are able to do and work your way up (see last week’s email to get tips on how to accomplish this). Practice the little things every day whether you “feel” like it or not. That persistence creates consistency and consistency will yield progress. As John C. Maxwell says in his book, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, “Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.”
Mistake #2- Not enjoying the process
Sometimes you are so focused on trying to do everything perfectly that you miss out on all the growth and learning along the way. The positive recognition of small improvements and progressions are easily shadowed by negative perfectionism. Celebrate the little wins each and every day.
Mistake #3- Not having a big enough reason why
The more reasons why you have to pursue health and fitness on a daily basis, the more likely you’ll be to follow through and the more consistent you will be. The more consistent you are, the more progress you’ll make. Consistency takes discipline. Discipline takes motivation. Motivation is born out of your reason why. All you need is one reason why for every excuse why not.
Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. It’s ok to make mistakes. You don’t need to throw out those New Year’s goals you wrote down in your crisp new planner.
Recognize where you might have made a mistake and then make an adjustment or two and keep on moving in the direction of your goal. Progress.
