Diabetes overview
Diabetes can be divided into 3 main types: Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational. Each one is different in cause and treatment even though they all share the same name.
37.3 million people in the U.S. have diabetes (11 % of U.S. population)*
90 – 95% of those people have preventable Type 2 diabetes. That bears repeating- 90 – 95% of all those with diabetes have a preventable form!
36.0 % of U.S. adult population and 48.8% of senior population has pre (Type 2) diabetes
The total direct and indirect estimated costs of diagnosed diabetes in the United States in 2017 was $327 billion
What are the differences between the types of diabetes?Type 1 DiabetesIncurable autoimmune disease
Insulin producing cells are irreparably damaged by autoimmune attack
Makes up only 5 – 10 % of all diabetes diagnosis
Daily insulin injections are required for survival of Type 1 diabetics
You cannot “catch” Type 1 diabetes
Eating too much sugar will not cause you to get Type 1 diabetes
Diet and lifestyle cannot prevent Type 1 diabetes but will help to manage complications such as kidney disease, heart disease, and nerve damage
Type 2 Diabetes Similar name but completely different disease from Type 1 diabetes
The pancreas in Type 2 diabetics is fully functioning and still produces insulin
Caused from insulin resistance due to inactivity and a diet high in processed ingredients and sugar
Makes up 90 – 95% of all diabetes cases
Preventable, treatable, and reversible with consistent lifestyle choices that improve insulin sensitivity
Taking insulin for Type 2 diabetes is not the same thing as having Type 1 diabetes

Gestational DiabetesOccurs during pregnancy in 2 – 10% of pregnancies
Caused when the mother’s body does not make enough insulin during pregnancy
Also be caused from insulin resistance
Preventable prior to pregnancy with regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a nutritious whole food diet
Blood sugar levels usually return to normal after delivery of the baby
Women with gestational diabetes are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes if they do not make appropriate lifestyle changes to improve insulin sensitivity
Diabetes is not a death sentence. Remember, 90 -95% of all diabetes is either Type 2 or Gestational which means it’s PREVENTABLE, treatable, and reversible! Yeah, that’s such great news!
