Lee Rhoades is off diabetes medications for good! In just 5 months he lowered his blood sugar an average 20% and dropped his hemoglobin A1C, a test used to measure a three month blood sugar control, by over 5 points to well within the normal non-diabetic limits!

But it wasn’t always that way.

After more than a decade of struggling with uncontrolled blood sugar and hypertension, Lee ended up in the hospital with dangerously elevated blood sugar levels, critically high blood pressure, and painful kidney stones. As a result, the doctors added daily insulin injections to his growing list of oral medications, further increasing his monthly expenses.

According to the American Diabetes Association’s website, “People with diagnosed diabetes incur average medical expenditures of $16,752 per year, of which about $9,601 is attributed to diabetes. On average, people with diagnosed diabetes have medical expenditures approximately 2.3 times higher than what expenditures would be in the absence of diabetes.”

This unfortunate truth was a reality for Lee. While the diagnosis wasn’t new, his worsening health was. No longer healthy enough to play golf and scared of long term complications, Lee realized he needed to make a change in his lifestyle if he ever wanted to see a change in his situation.

But how do you change after 15 years?

When faced with serious health conditions, it’s natural to have questions and uncertainties.

"What should I eat?
What shouldn’t I eat?
Where do I start?
Are there any foods that both my wife and I could enjoy together?
What about exercise?"

Motivated to improve his health for good and to eliminate costly medications, Lee reached out for help from MOTIVFIT in applying a holistic approach to nutrition and exercise.

“My diet needed revamping.”  Lee recalls. ”The urologist wanted me to lower oxalate levels for the kidney stone issue.  I also needed a diet that lowered my blood sugar and blood pressure. Frankly, after reading the literature I was unsure of what I should be eating.”

Lee’s doctor told him what to do, but he didn’t tell him HOW or WHY to do it. Lee had some information, but he lacked the skills to apply it in a way that would be best for him and his family.

Lee concluded “I’d imagine I can’t eat cinnamon buns anymore, but I just don’t know what I CAN eat.”

The Process of Improving Health Enough to Get Off Medications

Every individual body is so wonderfully unique in how it functions and controlling diabetes isn’t any different. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. What works for some may not necessarily work for others. Likewise, what may have worked in the past may not be the most optimal solution for your body today.

MOTIVFIT’s fitness and nutrition coaching focused Lee on small habit changes that add up over time. He was able to change his outlook on negative habits while trying new positive health practices using the educational tools to help him understand how the body works.  These new skills helped Lee to learn to overcome years of repetitive failure and create lasting change.

Fitness and nutrition coaching helped Lee to learn what was best for his body on a week by week basis, taking the stress out of needing to know everything to do all at once. By combining food and exercise journaling with glucose monitoring, Lee was able to figure out exactly which foods and fitness routines had a positive effect on his blood sugar.

Lee says “Weekly video-based coaching has provided me with tools to use and a better understanding of the consequences of poor diet. Setting weekly goals has made it easier to make changes and track progress. In addition, MOTIVFIT provided additional literature to review on related subjects.”

The Result

Many of the health problems plaguing today’s society, such as diabetes, are a result of poor nutrition and lifestyle factors. MOTIVFIT fitness and nutrition coaching helps support your body and enhance its ability to heal.

The goal with fitness and nutrition coaching is to work towards getting the body to function optimally while helping you understand why and how to achieve it. When this happens, the need for medication oftentimes decreases because the body is doing the job correctly.

After one month, Lee’s kidney function was back to normal. In just 3 months, Lee’s doctor took him off the insulin. Just a few months after that, his doctor slashed his oral medication in half, telling Lee “I’ve never seen anybody’s numbers improve that fast!”  After 8 months he was told by his doctor that he was no longer diabetic and was taken off all diabetes medication!

Life changing!

How did he do it?

With a personal goal to get off medications plus a little hard work, combined with some supportive accountability, Lee was diligent to track his blood sugar and blood pressure daily. He has made significant improvement in the quality of his meal choices while finding things he really enjoys to eat. He enlisted support from his family and he was always willing to try something new because he knew if he could get off his medication, then it was all worthwhile.

He’s now saving thousands of dollars on diabetes medications each year.

According to the CDC National Diabetes Statistics Report 2020, addressing diabetes may prevent many other health ailments and diseases, further reducing health costs.

Lee was able to drop his blood sugar readings an average of 26 points which was a 20% reduction in daily blood sugar readings and lowered his blood pressure by 10%.

Even More Results

While getting off medications is the biggest reward, the benefits don’t stop there. Lee now weighs the same weight he did as a senior in high school. Plus, not only was Lee able to get his energy up enough to play golf again, he even discovered that his blood sugar readings were actually the best on golf days! Just another bonus to being able to live an active lifestyle!

Lee has come a long way in a short time. He has seen the positive impact of proper nutrition, exercise and MOTIVFIT’s coaching. He now has the knowledge to make wise food choices and he has the confidence that he can achieve lasting results when applying the principles he’s learned.

When thinking about how his life has changed, Lee says “In 5 months I have substantially lowered my blood sugar and blood pressure allowing me to both eliminate and / or reduce my medications that I have been taking for the last 15 years.”

Now, Lee spends his days on the golf course and enjoying activities with his wife instead of worrying about his declining health
