At the start of every coaching session I ask my clients this simple question: “What is working well for you this week?”  In other words, what new things did you discover about yourself? What habits are delivering results? What areas did you make improvements in well-being, nutrition, or fitness this week?

I ask this question to help set the brain in a positive trajectory.

So much of life is spent focused on the negative- traffic, politics, sickness… We have to renew our mind daily to see that there is good all around us.

But even in asking a positive question, most people will answer something like:

“I’m restricting my calories, BUT I’m not losing weight.”

Or “I’m working out twice a day, BUT I’m not feeling stronger.”

Or “I’m walking 5,000 steps, BUT I’m eating sweets every night before bed.”

That’s a lot of buts! With each “but” there follows something that ISN’T going well (hmmm, isn’t that the opposite of the original positive question). This also means that what came before the “but” isn’t working well either.

It’s important to separate what is working from what isn’t. Why? Because results will come from activities that are moving you in the direction of your goal. You want to spend time on those activities.

Let’s try this again.

Really focus on what is working well for you this week. What new things did you discover about yourself? What habits are delivering results? What areas did you make improvements in well-being, nutrition, or fitness this week?

If eating slowly and mindfully is making you feel more satisfied at mealtime, then keep doing it!

If going for a walk at lunchtime energizes your afternoon, then keep doing it!

If eating to 80% full is keeping you from overindulging, then keep doing it!

Keep doing what is working well for you. No buts about it!

Take a moment to reflect on your victories this week. What positive changes have you noticed? Share with us and commit to continuing what's working for you.
