When Life Gives You Lemons... Go Fly a Kite
In Las Vegas we have two primary seasons: heat and wind. While our desert temperatures are world renowned, I’ll save the topic of oppressive heat for another day, likely in mid August. For now, we are in our windy season and let’s just say, I’m not a fan of the wind. Or shall I rephrase that: I loathe, detest, and abhor the wind.

Hang in there with me like a monkey on a hurricane blown palm tree- it will get better.
A few days back my brother was in town visiting with his kids. We had plans to spend some time hiking, weather permitting. It wasn’t long before the spring Vegas winds picked up with an unpromising forecast of no end in sight. Shocker (insert sarcastic eye roll here). Sharing my disappointment with my brother, the windy forecast generally means no hiking.
He replied “We are out flying kites right now!”
In an instant I realized that my perspective on wind was a limiting belief that kept me from seeing that you can still have fun if you just see it a different way.
I can’t stop the wind – but I CAN change the way I think about it.
Forget the overused “when life gives you lemons” saying! When life gives you wind, go fly a kite!

Back in the 90’s in the desert of Arizona, scientists created a “perfect” environment to mimic the earth’s ecosystems. The plants had all the right conditions to grow and initially thrived with rapid growth. After a period of time, the Bio-dome trees started toppling despite living in the man-made perfect environment. It was later discovered that the reason for the tree death was because they didn’t have wind. Wind in nature helps trees to grow robust root systems in addition to building “stress wood”, the fortified response making bark stronger.
Wind makes trees strong. It’s the natural, the unexpected, the unpredictable that fortifies the trees.
Winds of life and the health and fitness journey make us strong. Wind makes us resilient. Wind makes us creative. Wind makes us fly to new heights.
This life is not going to be free of winds and storms. Neither is the quest for health. But, sometimes we think that something is wrong with us if the storms keep coming or we can never be vibrant and healthy if we can’t have perfect conditions. Perhaps you just need a new way of looking at it. Let the windless bio-dome be a good reminder that man’s idea of “perfect” never is.
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (James 1:2-4)
